A Conversation with Riaan Drever on the Magic of the Maldives

Few places spark the imagination quite like the Maldives. With its sugar-white sands, crystal-clear waters and lush marine life, the archipelago remains the quintessential escape. For Riaan Drever, General Manager of both Pullman Maldives Maamutaa and Mercure Maldives Kooddoo, it’s more than just a destination—it’s a transformative experience.

Meet Riaan Drever — a globe-trotting hotelier with a passport full of stamps and a heart anchored firmly in the Indian Ocean. Hailing from South Africa, Riaan began his hospitality journey unusually early, studying hotel management in high school (while most teens were still mastering toast). He sharpened his skills with an apprenticeship in Johannesburg, before heading to the USA to broaden his horizons — and likely his accent.

After returning to South Africa for a stint at the legendary Westcliff (then Orient Express, now Four Seasons), Riaan caught the island bug in Zanzibar — and never really looked back. Over the past 25 years, he’s built a career that reads like a travel magazine index: from Sri Lanka to Saudi Arabia, and most extensively across the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean, including the Comoros, back to Zanzibar, and now, the Maldives.

For the last 13 years, Riaan has called the Maldives his professional home, bringing his unique brand of experience and energy to celebrated names like Gili Lankanfushi, Jumeirah, and Centara. He has also played a key role in launching and leading stunning resorts like Dhigali and Avani+ Fares.

Today, he’s the Cluster General Manager of Pullman Maamutaa and Mercure Kooddoo by Accor — where he continues to blend warm island hospitality with world-class service (and maybe a good South African braai now and then).

“The Maldives is not just a destination,” says Drever. “It’s an experience of pure escapism. It’s where time slows down and every detail is curated to perfection.”

Two Resorts, Two Distinct Vibes

Pullman Maldives Maamutaa is the epitome of luxury. With 122 villas—two of which are underwater—the all-inclusive resort focuses on wellness, balance and indulgence. Guests are treated to world-class dining, outdoor fitness trails and immersive nature experiences.

“Pullman is about balance—mind, body and soul,” Drever explains. “Guests are encouraged to disconnect from stress and reconnect with themselves.”

Mercure Maldives Kooddoo offers a more accessible version of island luxury. With 70 villas and just a short journey from Kooddoo Airport, it’s tailored for those seeking authentic, relaxed travel with a vibrant edge.

“Mercure is perfect for travellers who want the Maldives without the formality. It’s colourful, connected and playful,” he adds.

Sustainability at the Heart

Both properties, under the Accor group, have made sustainability central to their operations. Pullman Maamutaa holds Green Globe certification, utilising solar power, bottling its own water, and composting waste on-site.

Mercure Kooddoo is pursuing its own sustainability credentials and has partnered with the MaRHE Centre to support marine research, particularly focused on dolphin conservation.

“We live on islands that could disappear if we don’t act responsibly,” Drever stresses. “Sustainability isn’t a feature—it’s a duty.”

Changing Travel Trends

While the Maldives still draws honeymooners and luxury seekers, the traveller demographic is shifting. Increasingly, families, digital nomads and wellness-focused guests are shaping demand.

“We’re seeing more guests from India and China, and a rise in families and wellness travellers,” says Drever. “People are now travelling with intention—they want purpose, not just palm trees.”

Both resorts are responding to these changes with curated wellness packages, eco-experiences and local excursions. From jungle boot camps at Pullman to dolphin-watching trips from Mercure, guests are encouraged to create meaningful memories.
